Stone Beads of South and Southeast Asia: Archaeology, Ethnography and Global Connections is by far the most comprehensive book on stone beads. Featuring contributions from 25 leading scholars representing 17 research institutions across eight countries, the book explores topics related to ancient and modern India as well as other regions of South Asia. Stone beads have become recognized as one of the most important markers of prehistoric technological complexity, particularly in South Asia, and their study is crucial for understanding past contacts, technological advancements, trade networks, mastery over material culture, and the procurement of diverse raw materials. With this in mind, the book discusses, using literary and epigraphical references, the development of stone beads through the ages, the usefulness of typologies, historical techniques used in their production, and modern scientific methods that aid in studying and interpreting past technologies. It also includes ethnohistorical studies of Khambhat (Cambay) to trace the historical development of the city—home to the world’s most prominent traditional stone bead industry since its beginnings—and ethnographic studies to explore the symbolism behind the persistent use of particular products.
