The ancient Egyptian language includes four basic color terms, while its painting tradition employs seven and later nine polychrome colors. These sets align with Stages IIa, V, and a partially complete Stage VII of the Berlin and Kay encoding sequence for language, supporting the theory of eleven basic perceptual color categories. These categories likely emerge through progressive differentiation. In visual representation, color use follows an active" model of expansion rather than a "response" model, indicating deliberate artistic choices. The distinction between color usage and color terminology carries important cognitive implications, suggesting that perceptual experience may outpace linguistic expression."
