This volume of the Annales Archéologiques Arabes Syriennes publishes proceedings associated with the IXth International Congress of Classical Archaeology, held in Damascus in October 1969. The contributions address archaeological and historical subjects concerning Syria and the wider ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern worlds, including excavations, architecture, sculpture, inscriptions, coins, ceramics, jewelry, and other categories of material culture. Particular attention is given to contacts between Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and indigenous Near Eastern traditions and to archaeological discoveries illuminating cultural exchange between East and West. The volume provides contemporary reports and specialist studies of objects, sites, and monuments presented in connection with the congress.
