This is the first comprehensive account of Etruscan gem engraving since Furtwängler’s brilliant chapter in Die antiken Gemmen (1900), and like all other modern studies on the subject, it owes much to that great work. The subject is a difficult one, requiring more thorough personal inspection of objects in collections than scholars often have the inclination or opportunity to devote. Z. has done well to cover so many of the European collections, but not Leningrad, unfortunately, nor those in the States. But this only slightly impairs the value of this work, which will surely be the starting point for many other studies—and not only of Etruscan gems.
