The theories put forward about translation, especially of English works, allow us to observe firsthand the contact between the French spirit and the English spirit as it revealed itself in literature. On the other hand, in relation to aesthetics, the way translation was conceived is connected to 18th-century ideas about taste; the growing opposition to the theory of free translation is one aspect of the struggle between two conceptions: absolute taste and relative taste.
