Magic and Medieval Society presents a thematic approach to the topic of magic and sorcery in Western Europe between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries, aiming to equip readers with the conceptual and documentary tools needed to reach informed conclusions about the existence, nature, significance, and uses of magic in medieval society. Contrary to earlier views, the authors argue that magic was deeply interwoven with various areas of cultural practice and was present throughout medieval society. Accordingly, the book is organized thematically, addressing topics such as the use of magic at medieval courts, in universities, and within the Church. Each chapter is supported by documents, diagrams, and images, enabling readers to examine evidence alongside the chapter discussions and form their own interpretations. The book contends that the witch craze was not a medieval phenomenon but rather a product of the Renaissance and Reformation, and it demonstrates how the foundations for early modern witch persecutions were laid.
