Sinkankas: A lengthy preface of 30 pages provides extensive information on gemstones, including those claimed to be magical by ancient authorities, as well as birthstones. It also features the poem Le Blason de la Marguerite, written by Jean de la Taille de Bondaroy in 1574 (see pp. XIV–XXI), which serves as a fitting introduction to the main text. This consists of an alphabetical listing of all gemstones and stones said to have magical influence or value in the treatment of disease—including those believed to stimulate sexual desire or, conversely, to suppress it. No fewer than 296 entries are included, most of which are supported by citations from earlier authors. The work also touches on materials whose actual identities remain speculative. Major J.R. Sankey is associated with the text. A ruled frame wraps the list of pierres, and a blank page follows (p. 5717). Biblical materials are also mentioned.
