In the 1240s, in Paris in all likelihood, Vincent of Beauvais undertook the writing of an encyclopedia for the benefit of his Dominican brothers. The Speculum maius is a vast compilation of ancient, patristic, and medieval texts, gathered into three mirrors: the Speculum naturale, Speculum doctrinale, and Speculum historiale. Knowledge is carefully organized and structured, with each quotation attributed to its author. The Etymologies of Isidore of Seville are among the major sources of the Speculum maius.
