gems, topaz, chemical analysis
An experimental study by Nicolas-Louis Vauquelin on the chemical composition of topaz. Using the analytical methods available at the end of the eighteenth century, Vauquelin examines topaz in an effort to determine its constituent substances and clarify its position among minerals. The paper belongs to the period in which chemical analysis was becoming increasingly important for distinguishing gemstones that earlier mineralogists had classified primarily by external appearance and physical properties. It is an early contribution to the chemical characterization of topaz and to the broader development of analytical mineralogy and scientific gemology.
