Sinkankas: Although by far most objects are made from stone and gemmy materials as chalcedony, obsidian, etc., there is no separate discussion of such materials, instead the author describes and comments on stone objects on the basis of their mode of manufacture, i.e., chipping or grinding, but in the second volume devotes separate chapters to objects made from shell, bone, copper, textiles, pottery, and hematite. Broad discussions of the manifestations of the Stone Age in North America follow with several chapters of concluding remarks. An enormous amount of material on gemstones is in the text but it must be sought for. However, there is a good discussion of the Flint Ridge, Ohio colorful chalcedonies and also remarks on obsidian, rock crystal, turquoise, jade, hematite, pearl, shell, catlinite, amber, etc. The large bibliography contains some references to gem materials.
