gems, glyptic, engraved gems, agate, cameo, intaglio

A scholarly catalogue of more than 400 engraved gems in the collection of Elector Johann Wilhelm of the Palatinate, preserved in Munich’s State Coin Collection. The material ranges from two classical examples to works of the late eighteenth century. Entries record place of manufacture, date, subject, physical description, dimensions, inventory number, provenance, and relevant literature. Black-and-white photographs and colour plates document the gems and their storage cabinets, while concordances link catalogue and inventory numbers.
