This illustrated catalog documents 299 cameos and 225 intaglios of historic Bavarian provenance in Munich’s State Coin Collection. Covering works from the Middle Ages to about 1700, it draws principally on the Wittelsbach collections and the collection of Regensburg prince-abbot Coelestin Steiglehner. Entries are organized chronologically and geographically. The cameos include carvings in agate, chalcedony, coral, and shell, providing a substantial reference for European glyptic art and the history of collecting.
