Van Dessel describes an engraved jasper intaglio discovered at Elewijt in Brabant, an important Roman-period site, and examines its material, engraving, iconography, and archaeological significance. He considers the figure or subject represented on the stone and compares it with examples from classical glyptic art in order to determine its interpretation and probable date. The find is discussed within the context of Roman remains from Elewijt and provides evidence for the use and circulation of engraved gemstones in Roman Belgium. The paper is a useful nineteenth-century record of a securely localized Roman gem find and contributes to the study of ancient intaglios and their archaeological contexts.
