La Revue has already published a certain number of archaic engraved gems; recent discoveries having brought renewed attention to this subject, it may be of interest to draw the attention of scholars to several stones of the same kind found in English collections, particularly those in which the subject represented by the engraver can be understood and identified. Indeed, this is a circumstance that occurs very rarely; among the quantity of such stones now gathered in our museums, it is altogether exceptional. Whatever conclusions may be drawn from this fact, the fact itself is beyond doubt. In all the pieces described below and illustrated on plate XX, the engraving is intaglio.
