Minerals have been among the most important natural materials handled by humans, from the earliest objects collected by our ancestors to the first mineralogical teaching collections. The history of these collections reveals the changing motivations for collecting minerals over time, from tools essential for survival to objects of scientific study. As the scientific study of minerals developed, mineralogical collections became important teaching resources, serving as the foundation of the first Schools of Mining Engineering and the first higher education course in Brazil. Examining the history of these collections also demonstrates that telling their stories allows them to transcend their original purpose, bringing researchers and museum visitors closer to the individuals who assembled them and transforming them from mere scientific or aesthetic objects into elements of the broader human quest for knowledge.
