The paper describes a roughly 660 × 165 km Precambrian geological block spanning Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan, with more than 36 gemstone localities. Materials include lazurite, spinel, clinohumite, ruby, sapphire, scapolite, cordierite, emerald, and tourmaline. Many deposits formed through metamorphism, with their mineral assemblages controlled by the original sediment composition and the metamorphic conditions.
