Describes the historic Steinkaulenberg gemstone mines at Idar-Oberstein, one of the principal sources of the agate, jasper, amethyst, rock crystal and other quartz materials that supported the region’s early lapidary industry. The authors review the geology and occurrence of the gem-bearing cavities and veins, the development of mining from surface collecting to underground workings, and the methods used to extract the material. Particular attention is given to the maze of shafts and tunnels that characterize the Steinkaulenberg and to the surviving workings preserved as a visitor mine. The article places the deposit within the broader history of Idar-Oberstein, showing how exploitation of local agate and related materials provided the foundation for the town’s growth as an important center of gemstone cutting and carving.
