A new type of artificially colour treated fei cui jewellery was submitted to the author’s laboratory during the past year. It is a new type of colour treatment where electroplating is used to apply colour both to the base of the stone and the mounting beneath it. This is applied to fei cui of good transparency and cut en cabochon providing a highly effective simulation of middle to gem quality fei cui and it comes in various colours. Whilst, the commodity is usually sold online. It is difficult to identify not only with standard testing equipment but also with an infrared spectrometer. In this article the authors warn our readers to be on the alert for this material and demonstrate how it can be identified.
