An account of experiments conducted by Jean d’Arcet and Guillaume-François Rouelle in Rouelle’s laboratory on diamonds and other precious stones subjected to intense heat. The investigations formed part of the eighteenth-century debate over the nature of diamond and its behavior in fire. By comparing diamonds with other gemstones under strongly heated conditions, the experiments showed the exceptional disappearance or destruction of diamond while other stones behaved differently. These observations contributed to the experimental work that eventually established diamond as a combustible substance and, subsequently, as a form of carbon. Published in the Journal de Physique in January 1772, the paper is an important early contribution to the experimental chemistry of gemstones.
