Ibn Masawayh’s Kitāb al-jawāhir wa-ṣifātuhā is an early Arabic treatise on precious stones and related luxury materials, traditionally attributed to Yūḥannā ibn Māsawayh (d. 857/858). As indicated by its title, the work concerns gems and their properties, the countries from which they were obtained, and the characteristics of divers and merchants involved in their procurement and trade. This 1977 Arabic edition makes the medieval text available for study.

Thailand.12, Bo Ploi.12, sapphire, corundum, gems
Schubnel describes an excursion to the sapphire mine at Bò-Phloï in Thailand, providing a contemporary account of the deposit and its exploitation. The article discusses the occurrence of sapphire, the mining operations and methods used to recover the gem-bearing material, and observations made at the workings. It provides useful documentation of the Bò-Phloï sapphire field and of Thai sapphire mining during the mid-1970s.
Ruby and sapphire research spans mineralogy, gem deposits, identification, treatments, synthesis and the history of the gem trade. Older publications can also be useful for tracing terminology, early observations and accounts of mining localities. Publication dates and the original source should be considered when using historical descriptions.
