Trapiche emeralds, rubies and sapphires display distinctive spoke-like or sectoral patterns related to crystal growth. These patterns may consist of inclusions, growth features, compositional variations or combinations of these features arranged according to the symmetry of the host crystal.
Trapiche Emerald, Ruby & Sapphire Photomicrographs
The Hyperion trapiche gallery includes microscopic features documented in natural trapiche emeralds, rubies and sapphires. Each entry is accompanied by descriptive information and, where available, references to the gemological literature.
What Trapiche Features Can Reveal
Microscopic examination can reveal the structure and development of trapiche patterns and their relationship to crystal growth. The form, orientation and composition of the arms and associated inclusions can provide information about the conditions under which the host crystal formed.
Hyperion combines inclusion photomicrography with supporting gemological information so that trapiche structures in emerald, ruby and sapphire can be examined and compared with documented examples.
