Behier, J. (1960)

Journal Article · Source: Annales géologiques de Madagascar · Publisher: République Malgache Ann. Géol. de Madagascar · Volume: Vol. 29 · Pages: 78 pp. · Language: in French

Abstract
Behier presents a descriptive survey of minerals and mineral occurrences in Madagascar, supplementing earlier mineralogical work with observations and locality information gathered by the Malagasy Geological Service. Particular attention is given to minerals from the island’s numerous pegmatites, with records from localities including Ambatosoratra, Befanamo, Maharidaza, Miarinkofeno, Ambatoharanana, Manakana, Ambalalehifotsy, Riampotsy, Androbe, and others. The work documents a wide variety of mineral species and their associations and occurrences, providing locality data that subsequently became an important source for the mineralogical geography of Madagascar. It is primarily a systematic contribution to descriptive and regional mineralogy rather than a general geological treatment, and forms part of Behier’s broader documentation of Madagascar’s exceptionally diverse mineral resources.

Laitakari, A. (1954)

Journal Article · Source: Geologi (Suomen Geol. Seura) · Volume: Vol. 6 · Issue: No. 3 · Pages: p. 21 · Language: in Finnish

Abstract
Laitakari reports the occurrence of corundum and garnet among the heavy minerals recovered during gold washing in Finnish Lapland. These resistant, high-density minerals remain with the heavy concentrate during panning and sluicing and were increasingly being collected by gold miners as potentially useful ornamental stones. The corundum occurs in several colors, including red and bluish material referred to as ruby and sapphire, although the Lapland material was generally of lower quality than commercial gem corundum. Garnets constitute another conspicuous component of the concentrates and include material suitable for cutting and polishing. The brief note is an early record of corundum from the Lapland placer-gold districts and reflects Laitakari’s broader effort to encourage recognition and use of Finland’s native gem and ornamental-stone resources. Later Finnish mineralogical compilations specifically cite Laitakari’s 1954 paper for corundum in the Lemmenjoki gold placers.

Exploring the Literature of Corundum

Ruby and sapphire research spans mineralogy, gem deposits, identification, treatments, synthesis and the history of the gem trade. Older publications can also be useful for tracing terminology, early observations and accounts of mining localities. Publication dates and the original source should be considered when using historical descriptions.
