In this abundantly illustrated third and final volume on the artifacts found by Edward H. Thompson in the Well of Sacrifice, specialists analyze the great variety of objects and debate whether they represent evidence of dateable prehistorical ritual. The collection includes the rare remains of hundreds of textiles, wooden objects, and copal incense offerings that were preserved in the waters of this limestone sinkhole, as well as the lithics, ceramics and bone and shell artifacts commonly found in Maya burials and caches and about 250 mammalian remains. These objects are remarkable for having been cut, torn, broken, and burned before they were thrown into the green waters of the sacred well at Chichen Itza.

Ceremonial Stone Objects of the Mexica Culture
Book
Gutiérrez Solana, N. (1983) Objetos Ceremoniales en Piedra de la Cultura Mexica. [Ceremonial Stone Objects of the Mexica Culture] Mexico City, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, 226 pp. + 124 pages of plates, 206 illustrations
Record No. 28860  |  ISBN/ISSN: 9685805946  |  Sinkankas/Born No.: NIS/NIB  |  Language: in Spanish  |  not seen
Gutiérrez Solana presents a systematic study of ceremonial stone objects associated with the Mexica (Aztec), examining their forms, iconography, religious functions, and relationship to ritual practices. The objects include stone representations and implements connected with sacrifice, autosacrifice, offerings, warfare, and the cult of particular deities. Individual pieces are analyzed through comparison with archaeological evidence and representations and descriptions in pre-Hispanic and early colonial sources. Among the objects discussed are zacatapayolli associated with bloodletting, as well as other carved stone implements and ritual forms. The study places these objects within Mexica religious symbolism rather than treating them simply as sculpture, providing an extensive illustrated corpus for understanding the material equipment of Aztec ceremonial life. Later scholarship continues to cite the book for individual ritual objects and their interpretation.

New data on the geology, mineral associations, conditions of formation, and gem varieties of jadeite rocks in the West Sayan region of Siberia. Jadeite and nephrite bodies occur as lenses and masses embedded within serpentinites. The paper describes the geological setting of these bodies, the processes responsible for their formation, and methods by which they may be prospected for gem and ornamental material. Includes a summary. Mestorozhdeniya Nefrita i Zhadeita v Kuruktagskom Ofiolitakh [title transliterated]. 26 pages. JSL. Contains advertisements.

El jade de México: El mundo esotérico del chalchihuite""

Book

Tibón examines jade and other greenstones in ancient Mexico primarily through their religious, symbolic, linguistic, and cultural significance rather than as a mineralogical study. Central to the book is the Nahuatl concept of chalchihuitl, encompassing precious green stones whose value extended far beyond ornament. Drawing on early colonial chronicles, indigenous traditions, mythology, place names, and archaeological material, Tibón explores associations of greenstone with water, vegetation, fertility, life, wealth, divinity, and supernatural power. He discusses its use in ritual objects, offerings and personal ornaments, as well as traditions concerning the discovery and recognition of chalchihuites. The work is especially useful for understanding the cultural concept of “jade” in Mesoamerica, where indigenous terminology did not necessarily correspond to modern mineralogical definitions. Later Mesoamerican scholarship continues to cite the book in discussions of the symbolism and cultural valuation of jade and greenstone.

Chen presents a geological investigation of the Alamas (Alaimas) primary nephrite deposit in Keriya (Yutian) County, Xinjiang, one of the historically important sources of high-quality white and pale greenish-white Hetian jade. The report examines the geological setting and conditions responsible for nephrite formation and includes chemical data for material from the deposit. Later publications citing this report reproduce analyses of eight Alamas samples, showing compositions dominated by SiO₂, MgO and CaO and close to tremolite, confirming tremolite as the principal constituent of the jade. The deposit occurs in the contact zone between intermediate-acid intrusive rocks and dolomitic marble; later accounts describe a systematic change from predominantly white and greenish-white jade farther from the intrusion to greener material nearer it, relating this zoning to the conditions of metasomatic nephrite formation.

It is based on the collection in the Victoria & Albert Museum and is the work of Dr. Assadullah Souren Melikian-Chirvani [b. 1936], the distinguished authority of Near Eastern metalwork. The many illustrations present relevant details of epigraphy and iconography, the great majority of which have not been previously published. Souren Melikian is a French-Iranian art historian, art critic, and curator. He is a renowned scholar of Iranian culture, and its sphere of influence.
