Writing under the pseudonym Jan ze Śliwina, Adam Honory Kirkor presents a historical and antiquarian guide to Vilnius and its surroundings, describing the city’s churches, monasteries, monuments, notable buildings, collections, archaeological remains, and places associated with Lithuanian history. The work combines a walking guide with historical notices drawn from documentary and antiquarian sources and records objects and discoveries known in and around Vilnius during the mid-nineteenth century. Of mineralogical and archaeological interest are references to prehistoric stone implements and antiquities found in the region, material that later figured in discussions of the distribution and provenance of polished stone artifacts in northeastern Europe. The book provides useful contemporary evidence for the developing archaeological study of Lithuania and for objects preserved in local collections before the establishment of more systematic archaeological institutions.

Edited by Johann Christian Felix Baehr, this volume presents the Greek text of Herodotus’s Histories (The Muses), revised principally from Thomas Gaisford’s edition. Herodotus’s nine books describe the peoples, geography, customs, natural products, and historical events of the Mediterranean, Egypt, the Near East, and parts of Asia during the ancient world. Of gemological interest are numerous passages concerning gold and other mineral resources, precious objects, seals, ornaments, and stones, together with accounts of mining and the acquisition and use of valuable natural materials among Egyptians, Persians, Scythians, Indians, and other peoples. Particularly important for the history of gemstones are Herodotus’s early descriptions of Indian gold, engraved signet stones, and objects of rock crystal and other materials. This nineteenth-century edition is principally significant as a scholarly source for the original Greek text rather than as an independent contribution to mineralogy.

Journal Article
Foetterle, F. and Österr, K.K. (1856) Die Geologie von Süd-Amerika. [The geology of South America] Mittheilungen aus Justus Perthes’ Geographischer anstalt über Wichtige Neue Erforschungen auf dem Gesammtgebiete der Geographie von Dr. A. Petermann, Vol. 2, pp. 187–192.
Record No. 7465  |  Sinkankas/Born No.: NIS/NIB  |  Language: in German  |  RWHL
Foetterle provides a concise survey of the geology and mineral resources of South America, synthesizing contemporary geological and geographical information for the continent. The paper outlines the principal geological formations and mountain systems and notes the distribution of economically important mineral deposits. Particular attention is given to the mineral wealth associated with the Andes and Brazil, including precious metals and occurrences of precious and ornamental stones. As an early attempt to summarize South American geology on a continental scale, the article is useful for tracing mid-nineteenth-century European knowledge of the geographical distribution of mineral and gem resources before systematic geological mapping had been completed across much of the continent.

Geschichte der Amerikanischen Urreligionen

History of the American Primeval Religions
Book
Müller, J.G. (1855) Geschichte der Amerikanischen Urreligionen. [History of the American Primeval Religions] Basel, Schweighauser'schen Verlagsbuchhandlung, 707 pp. (see pages 485, 486 and 584).
Record No. 8163  |  Sinkankas/Born No.: NIS/NIB  |  Language: in German  |  RWHL
Müller presents a comparative study of the indigenous religions of the Americas, attempting to reconstruct their beliefs, mythology, cosmology, ritual practices, priesthoods, and concepts of divinity from early chronicles, ethnographic accounts, and archaeological evidence. The work ranges widely across North, Central, and South America, with substantial attention to the civilizations of Mexico, Central America, and the Andes. Of particular relevance to the history of gems and ornamental stones are discussions of sacred objects, idols, amulets, offerings, and the ritual significance attributed to valuable natural materials, including precious and colored stones. Although its interpretations reflect the comparative religious theories and terminology of the mid-nineteenth century, the book is useful as an extensive compilation of early documentary evidence concerning indigenous American beliefs and the ceremonial use of stone and other valued materials.

Amazonas

Amazon
Journal Article
Dias, A.G. (1855) Amazonas. [Amazon] Revista do Instituto Historico e Geographico do Brazil, Vol. 18, No. 17, pp. 5–66.
Record No. 7977  |  Sinkankas/Born No.: NIS/NIB  |  Language: in Portuguese  |  RWHL
Dias examines the historical tradition that a nation or society of warrior women—the legendary Amazons—once existed in Brazil, a question posed to him by Emperor Pedro II and the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro. Comparing classical traditions with accounts of early European explorers and later travelers in South America, he critically reviews reports associated particularly with Francisco de Orellana’s sixteenth-century descent of the Amazon River and the supposed encounters with communities of female warriors from which the river acquired its European name. Dias considers the credibility of the various witnesses, the transmission and embellishment of their stories, and attempts to relate South American traditions to the Amazons of classical antiquity. He argues that repetition by successive writers transformed uncertain reports into accepted historical tradition and finds no convincing eyewitness evidence for the existence of a distinct nation of Amazons in Brazil. The study is an early example of critical Brazilian historiography applied to exploration narratives, Indigenous traditions, and European interpretations of the Amazon region.

Historiadores Primitivos de Indias

Early Historians of the Indies
Edited Book
Vedia, E., de, editor (1853) Historiadores Primitivos de Indias. [Early Historians of the Indies]. Madrid, M. Rivadeneyra, 574 pp..
Record No. 8168  |  Sinkankas/Born No.: NIS/NIB  |  Language: in Spanish  |  RWHL
Edited by Enrique de Vedia, this volume brings together Spanish accounts of the discovery, conquest, and early colonial history of the Americas, reprinting works by several of the principal sixteenth-century chroniclers of the Indies. Published as part of the Biblioteca de Autores Españoles, it preserves important early descriptions of the peoples, geography, natural resources, customs, and material culture encountered by the Spaniards in the New World. Of particular relevance to gemological and historical research are references in the collected chronicles to indigenous goldwork, pearls, emeralds, precious and ornamental stones, and the valuables obtained through trade, tribute, and conquest. As a nineteenth-century compilation of otherwise difficult-to-consult early texts, the volume became a useful source for the study of Spanish-American history and early European accounts of New World mineral and gem resources.

Über die aztekifchen Ortsnamen

About the Aztec place names
Journal Article
Buschmann, J.C.E. (1853) Über die aztekifchen Ortsnamen. [About the Aztec place names] Abhandlungen der Königlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, Vol. 1852, pp. 607–812 (see p. 714).
Record No. 7470  |  Sinkankas/Born No.: NIS/NIB  |  Language: in German  |  RWHL
Buschmann’s extensive study examines Aztec (Nahuatl) place names and their linguistic structure, meanings, geographical distribution, and historical significance, drawing on early Mexican sources and contemporary geographical knowledge. He analyzes the component words used in indigenous toponyms and uses them to investigate the distribution and migrations of Nahuatl-speaking peoples through Mexico and Central America. Of particular interest to the history of jade and gemstones, p. 714 discusses place names incorporating Nahuatl terms associated with precious stones or greenstone, providing evidence for the geographical and linguistic use of such terminology in pre-Hispanic Mexico. The paper is an important nineteenth-century contribution to the comparative study of Nahuatl language, ethnography, and historical geography.

Book
Grimmel, J. (1853) De lapidum cultu apud patriarchas quaesito: Commentatio de locis Geneseos XXVIII, 18. 19. et XXXV, 14. 15. [On the worship of stones among the patriarchs investigated: Commentary on the passages of Genesis XXVIII, 18. 19. and XXXV, 14. 15] Marburgi Cattorum, Elwerti Academicis, 76 pp. (see pp. 14–15)
Record No. 7467  |  Sinkankas/Born No.: NIS/NIB  |  Language: in Latin  |  RWHL
Grimmel examines the question of stone veneration among the biblical patriarchs through a detailed philological and theological analysis of Genesis 28:18–19 and 35:14–15, passages describing Jacob’s erection, anointing, and naming of a stone pillar at Bethel. He considers whether these actions represent actual litholatry or should instead be understood as the setting up of a commemorative or sacred monument associated with divine revelation. Drawing on biblical texts, classical sources, and comparative accounts of ancient religious practices, the work places Jacob’s stone within the broader history of sacred stones, pillars, and anointed stones. Of particular interest are pp. 14–15, where Grimmel discusses traditions concerning stones credited with sacred or supernatural significance. The study provides a useful nineteenth-century treatment of the religious symbolism and ritual use of stones in the ancient Near East.

An Elementary Introduction to Mineralogy

Book
Phillips, W., Brooke, H.J. and Miller, W.H. (1852) An Elementary Introduction to Mineralogy. London, Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 700 pp. (see p. 650).
Record No. 7468  |  Sinkankas/Born No.: NIS/NIB  |  RWHL
This substantially revised edition of William Phillips’s classic mineralogical textbook presents a systematic introduction to mineralogy based principally on crystallographic form, physical properties, chemical composition, and geological occurrence. Revised and enlarged by Henry James Brooke and William Hallowes Miller, it incorporates the major advances in crystallography and mineral chemistry made since Phillips’s earlier editions, with Miller’s crystallographic expertise giving the work particular scientific importance. Individual mineral species are described with their characteristic crystal forms, cleavage, hardness, specific gravity, lustre, colour, composition, localities, and varieties, including numerous minerals of gemological interest such as diamond, corundum (ruby and sapphire), spinel, beryl (emerald), topaz, tourmaline, garnet, quartz, zircon, and feldspar. The volume provides a useful mid-nineteenth-century record of mineral classification and nomenclature at a period when crystallography and chemical analysis were becoming firmly established as the foundations of systematic mineralogy.
